Source Player is a subtitle centered video player tailored for English learner. It provides many useful functionalities for English study, such as:
Source Player supports both offline and YouTube videos. Your favorite YouTube channels will be your valuable learning resources.
Source Player is a full-functional video player. It supports most of the main-stream video formats (mkv, mp4, mov and avi) and plenty of video playback functions. Let's first see how to play a video file.
After launch the Source Player, you will see the main window.
Clicking the "Open Movie File..." item on the file panel will pop up the file open dialog. Navigate to the video file and open it from this dialog, the video file will be played automatically.
If it is the first time you open video file in Source Player, very likely the subtitle is not ready. To download the subtitles, you can mouse click the "Click To Download" button.
A input dialog will show up, you may need to modify the query string to get a better search result.
If everything works as expected, after a few seconds, the subtitles for the playing video will be downloaded. You can find the downloaded subtitle names in the below select list.
Now, both the video and subtitle are ready, you can start to watch the video to study language. The player control bar on the bottom left side is where to play, pause, loop and seek the video.
The four buttons on the right side of the player control bar provide shortcuts for some frequently used functions. The extend button can toggle between the extended view and regular view of the player.
The file open button will toggle the file open panel.
The tuning button will toggle the tuning panel, where you can tune up the playback speed and mask height (will talk about it later in this document).
The side panel button will toggle the side panel.
Source Player gives several ways to instantly access the information related to the current line.
By clicking the word in the subtitle at the bottom of player, the build-in dictionary will pop-up.
If you need more information about a word, you can right click the word and click "Search in Web".
The Web Search Panel will show up and display the search result. You can switch to different search sources for more information. The search source is highly configurable, will talk about it later.
If you want to save the word to your word book, right click the word and click "Add to Word Book".
Sometimes, you will meet some videos with hardcoded subtitle. If the embedded subtitle is same as your native language, the video will not be suitable for language study. Source Player provides subtitle mask to hide the hardcoded one. Click the tuning button and adjust the mask height to hide it.
By clicking the Subtitle button on the screenshot between, the Subtitle Panel will show up.
Typing a word in the search box, the lines will be filtered.
If you want to loop between line A and line B, just drag and drop in this panel to select the range. The loop range will be highlighted by a blue edge.
If you simply want to repeat the current line, click the loop button or press the "Enter" key.
The subtitle panel is also the usual place to manage subtitle, like download subtitles, add external subtitle, change subtitle time shift.
Other than that, you will find more subtitle management functions in the "Subtitles" application menu.
To open the YouTube Browser, click the button below.
If you click the video in the browser panel, the player on the left side will play it automatically.
The YouTube browser supports cookie, so you may login to YouTube to watch your previously added favorite videos.
To manage your word book, click the button below the open the Work Book Panel.
At the bottom of this panel, you can change the display order of the word list or change the filter candition.
The Web Search Panel is where you search the meaning of a word from multiple sources. Click the button below to open it.
The search sources are highly configurable. You can even replace an existing one with your new search source. To configurate the search sources, click this small cog button.
In the opened configuration panel, you can switch to different search sources by checking the check box at right side of each search source. (NOTE: due to the display space limitation, Source Player supports at most four search sources to turn on)
To change the order of search source, just drag and drop the search source to a new position.
